How Attitude Can Change Your Life And Your View At Life

There are basically 2 kinds of reactions to a driver ahead of you donning a “Learner” Board.

One; honk away and show complete displeasure at this learner trying to drive cautiously at a time when it is peak hour causing hindrance and nuisance to everyone around. After all, who has the time to be patient when we all run the race of life?

The other; more of a response and not just a reaction; Hey, I used to be in that position and I know how terrifying that feeling can be. Allow the newbie some time to catch onto a lane and then overtake carefully.

All of us were trainees at some point in time, some of us may have been courageous too and gone through that cycle again and again. That is the learning circle and a good attitude will always push us to learn and adapt each day! There is no age to learn yaa!

At the reception standing in the hotel lobby, I wore those shiny badges in my initial career days. “Trainee Badge” Scared as crazy, reluctant to answer queries by guests let alone manage any work as such around cashiering. One of those days, we had a massive big group check in and all my seniors seemed caught up when one guest came over to the reception to check out. He saw me standing behind the row of seniors all trying their level best to close in on the number of guests standing right in front to get attended to.

Hey little girl….could you help me out please?
Yes Yes Sir….but I am just a trainee. Do you mind waiting? Please? Please? I am just a trainee
Oh how nice, are you studying Hotel Management?
Yes Sir….and that’s why here to learn the practical application
And how will you manage that if you don’t even try? Come on, manage my billing

Hands cold as ice, feet numb and now the brain trying to remember everything learnt, I slowly moved ahead and faced my guest. I looked nervously around hoping that my seniors would pull me out of this awkwardness but to no avail.

Come on; you can do this….I told myself!

My guest there, smiled; I promise I won’t bite you girl. Take your time and do it right

Called up all relevant departments informing of the check out, asked the guest if the stay was comfortable and then proceeded to pull up the bill. Had all these steps play up in my mind and I behaved just like a robot trying to pick each step nervously. All went off just fine as I stood there trembling and nervously recounting all that was needed to be done.

See, you managed just fine! Yes a smile would have made me feel so much better. I will be at my office and then later this evening at the airport. Just in case, any payment was missed out, call me on this number and I will ensure that the payment is taken care of. You did well and you should be proud of yourself.

I read his business card – General Manager of another respected and popular Hotel chain, and our competitor!

When tables changed; I sat very uncomfortable in my chair facing a notorious associate with strange behaviours. Yes, I was attempting to act as a coach for the very first time. The easy thing to do would have been to let the associate find on his own what his negative attitude can cost him. But then, would I have done a job right myself? Is that what I am all about then? Am I afraid to do the right thing only because I don’t want to look bad? What if my coaches had not allowed me to learn and grow?

Leaders have a big job to do and no, not because they are paid for it; because leaders leave a unforgettable mark on the next bunch of leaders, the future of an organization. If I see young TCSers walk in late for a session even today, I make it a point to stop and correct them. Whether it is taken well or not is not in my hands but I got to do that! Something inside just pricks me no end….

Learning and Sharing are interchangeable and linked by an umbilical cord of Attitude. You can absorb all around like a sponge; and age, designation and hierarchy just don’t matter. What matters is an Attitude to learn. But, oh yes, when you get into a position to teach or coach or simply influence by great actions and not just words; do that right too! Again, teaching will not become a right only with age and designation, it is the willingness to take that extra mile…to show that you care…to show patience for someone else!

A lot of talk around creating one’s own Brand identity these days. So then, what is this made of? Attitude, Values, Competencies, Skills and Knowledge that we display all the time. It’s not about speaking of one’s own brand; it’s more about what others think of you as a brand.

That day; a competitor sowed a seed of our own value Learning and Sharing. I treasure that oh so dearly till date!

Talking of great Brands and this image from a fortnight back speaks a thousand words….Attitude…what more can one say?

I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
